Featured Sales Properties: Cedar Tree Neck, West Tisbury

One of the joys of Martha's Vineyard are its many trails and conservation areas that are protected for public enjoyment and recreation by various organizations.  One such organization is Sheriffs Meadow Foundation, who operate Cedar Tree Neck in West Tisbury.

The trails at Cedar Tree Neck cover 400 acres and are a combination of woodland, streams, ponds and ocean and not only provide a habitat for wildlife, birds, insects and other creatures, they provide some of the most enjoyable paths for exploration of young and old alike.  Clearly marked and easy to navigate, the trail is divided into color coded paths, providing different combinations of ways to take you to the woods or the ocean and that ultimately join together in a loop.

Cedar Tree Neck exists because of the efforts of several people including Henry Beetle Hough (who founded Sheriff Meadows Foundation with his wife in 1959) and Allen H Morgan, (who was the Executive Vice-President of the Massachusetts Audubon Society). Together they raised the funds to secure the purchase of 100 acres of North Shore land from the Daggett family, who contributed by selling the land at below market value.  The Houghs, Nortons and Stevenson families also donated land and the areas previously known as “Obed Sherman Daggett and Maria Roberts Daggett Sanctuary”, the “A.S. Reed Bird Refuge”, “Fish Hook” and the “George A. Hough Preserve”  collectively became known as “Cedar Tree Neck”.

Nowadays it’s a year round destination for families providing a sheltered walking spot in all weathers at all times of the year.    There is no swimming off the sandy/rocky shoreline of Cedar Tree neck, (you would have to go to nearby Lamberts Cove Beach to swim), but the area offers miles of hiking, bird-watching and exploration.
