It’s not often you stumble upon a Japanese dance performance in the middle of Menemsha on a Monday evening!

It's very easy to become complacent living on Martha's Vineyard, you can easily take for granted this island and complain about its quirks and challenges, but when I drove up island today, first to meet a broker to preview this new listing on the south shore, and then to open up this house for a showing on Squibnocket Ridge, I was really overcome by how special a place this is. How lucky we are to live here and to experience all that we do in the world of real estate on Martha's Vineyard.

Last week saw the Chilmark Store wake from it's winter slumber on a beautiful summery day. Workers trucks parked alongside Cabriolets as summer residents start to return to meet their caretakers and open up their homes. Of course the pizza special for the day was local Kale and Stinging Nettle - afterall this is Chilmark!

Each Mother’s Day weekend, Featherstone Center for the Arts celebrates the coming of spring by opening their “Art of Flowers” exhibition.  Now in its 20th year, this event kicks off the summer art season in style and is tagged to be their busiest show of the Featherstone calendar.

It's the 5th Annual Pink and Green weekend in Edgartown over the forthcoming weekend! The rotton rainy week here on the Vineyard has everyones fingers crossed for some sunshine for Edgartowns celebration of Spring. Whatever the weather there are many events planned including the Pink & Green Kentucky Derby Party, Mother’s Day Brunches, sales and promotions at many stores as they softly open for the season, and the 4th Annual Pub Crawl. Announcing the Inaugural Martha's Vineyard Concert Series lineup !!

Everyone has been talking about “The Derby” lately (the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby). The jetties are crowded with fishermen of all ages, fishing boats are out in full force and every truck on the road has a selection of rods lined up on the rack. But surf is another great thing about this time of year on the island! Fall is traditionally the season to surf on the Vineyard.  The tropical storms and hurricanes blowing up the coast bring swell to the island’s south shore and beyond. Hurricane Joaquin thankfully tracked way east out to sea but still delivered us a week's worth of clean waves last week for all levels of surfers…and there are more to come in the months ahead for those hearty enough to brave chillier water temps. Whatever your activity, this is a great time to be out on the water on Martha’s Vineyard!

September and early October are treasured time on Martha’s Vineyard as everyone tries to hold on to summer and log in as much beach time as possible before the season disappears completely.  There is a lot of denial about the days getting shorter, the wind direction coming out of the north again, and need to swap out flip flops for something more substantial. Outdoor showers are still in full use. Cottage windows are still open (in the middle of the day anyway). Leaves are still green, mostly. This is the time of year that, if you hang out on the beach until the late afternoon, you soon find yourself in the glow of the setting sun and heading home over the dunes in the dark, reluctantly letting go of the day, thinking about how magical this place really is. These are the quiet times to soak it all up before winter blows in!

The annual summer benefit for Sheriff’s Meadow Foundation took place Monday July 20^th.  Set on the beautiful Borggaard Farm on Indian Hill Road in West Tisbury, it was a wonderful location for people from all over the Island to get together and celebrate the foundation’s accomplishments.  President Chris Alley, and Executive Director Adam Moore each spoke to a captivated audience. Photographs of the various properties Sheriff’s Meadow has maintained and protected such as the antique Mayhew-Hancock-Mitchell house and Quansoo Farm flashed on large screens as guests dined.  This event was another reminder of how fortunate we are to have so many people dedicated to preserving our Island.
