The house was built in the 1950’s, and remains in the original owner’s family.  The location was discovered, after several days visiting different beaches to find the perfect spot upon which to build.

The family travelled up island to the south side of Gay Head, and followed a trail which they found was being enlarged at the time to become the road that is now Moshup Trail.  They followed the road as far as they could until it became an oxcart track along the shore and they stopped when they saw a small group of parked cars.   After spending a day on the beautiful Atlantic sandy beach, they decided where they would build their dream.

The Mondriaan House was inspired by the French painter of the same name, known for his geometric and colorful abstract art works.  It is also known locally as “The Painted House” or “The Rainbow House”. This simple summer cottage, was completed by the current, and only owners in 1959 , and so began a lifetime of summer memories for the family.
