Ice House Pond used to only be known a select few islanders and was therefore named "The Secret Pond" by some, because it was only accessible to home owners and a handful of neighbors.  The special Martha's Vineyard Rental spot is still unknown to many is being discovered by more and more people since the MV Landbank purchased land at one side of the pond in 2004 and opened it up to the public.  

Old House Pond as its also known, gets its more familiar name from the business of harvesting ice during the winter months which would be sent all over the east coast and even down to Florida - in the days before refrigeration.

Social media and word of mouth has meant the Pond now attracts the general public to it’s pristine cool freshwater however after the Landbank's somewhat controversial acquisition, there have been some necessary restrictions of its use to keep the pond protected. Limited to swimming-only – no camping out or loitering is allowed - and the walk on access only from the parking lot, which is half a mile away – puts some folk off.  Handicap access is also available from a closer dedicated parking area.  

The pond has retained much of its character, but you no longer find homeowners living around the pond skinny dipping quite so freely!
