A written history of the area states that writer, poet and editor, Max Eastman bought about 80 acres on East Pasture Road back in the 1930’s and built his home there where he and his third wife, Yvette, lived for the next 40 plus years.  Much of the property was donated to Sheriffs Meadow by his wife after Max Eastman’s death, and their home was given to the University of Indiana to be used as a writers retreat.  Known for their love for nudity, the Eastmans were often spotted on the beach naked and in an article written in the Martha’s Vineyard Magazine he was recalled as “a rascal and a rake.
